Lab-grown vs natural diamonds: which is right for you?

Lab-grown vs natural diamonds: which is right for you?

Are lab-grown diamonds real?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond has the same chemical makeup, hardness and sparkle as a natural one: it's pure carbon arranged in the same crystal structure. It isn't a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite. The difference is its origin. Natural diamonds formed deep in the earth over billions of years; lab-grown diamonds are created in a matter of weeks using advanced technology that recreates those conditions.

Can you tell them apart?

Not with the naked eye, and not with a standard jeweller's loupe. Telling them apart takes specialised laboratory equipment. That's why a grading report matters: independent labs such as GIA and IGI grade both types, and the report clearly states whether a stone is natural or laboratory-grown. Many stones also carry a microscopic laser inscription on their edge that matches the report number.

How the prices compare

This is the biggest practical difference. A lab-grown diamond typically costs a fraction of a natural diamond of the same size and quality. For many clients, that means a larger stone, a higher grade, or room in the budget for a more elaborate setting.

Value over time

Natural diamonds are rare, and they have an established resale market, so they tend to hold their value better. Lab-grown diamonds can be produced in larger quantities, and their prices have fallen over time, so their resale value is limited. If long-term value or passing a stone down matters to you, natural is usually the better fit. If you're choosing purely for beauty and size, lab-grown gives you more for your budget.

What about ethics and sustainability?

Both options can be responsible choices, and both have an environmental footprint. The details depend on where and how each stone was mined or grown. If this matters to you, ask your jeweller about the origin of the specific stone and the certification behind it. A good jeweller will answer openly.

How to decide

  • Choose natural if rarity, tradition and long-term value are important to you.
  • Choose lab-grown if you want the largest, highest-grade stone your budget allows.
  • Either way, focus on cut quality first. A beautifully cut diamond outshines a larger stone with a poor cut.

The best way to decide is to see both side by side. In a consultation, we'll show you natural and lab-grown stones next to each other, explain each grading report, and help you find the balance that feels right. There's no pressure either way; the right choice is the one you'll love wearing.
